On February 25, 2010 a brilliant, athletic, talented and beautiful 17-year-old San Diego girl named Chelsea King was sexually assaulted and murdered while on her morning trail run in Ranch Bernardo Community Park. “Chelsea’s life was cut short by the heinous act of a known sexual predator while in the midst of her training run that day in the park. Word quickly spread and on the morning of March 20, 2010 more than 3,500 community members joined together to run and walk in solidarity with, and in honor of Chelsea, who they adopted as one of their own”. (nk. 2014)

The event was promoted by WOM, on social media and in the news. The original grass-roots “Finish Chelsea’s Run” was such a moving and healing experience for the community that Kelly, Brent and Tylor King decided to make it an official, annual tradition in San Diego hosted by the Chelsea’s Light Foundation, the organization they founded to make positive change for children. This annual run/walk is now the primary fundraiser for the Chelsea’s Light Foundation Sunflower Scholarship Fund, providing scholarships for San Diego County college-bound teens that have embraced characteristics that embodied Chelsea’s academic prowess and service-over-self ethic. The 2013 run/walk enabled the Foundation to provide over $70,000 in Sunflower Scholarships to 10 amazing students. They have now joined forces with Girl Scouts San Diego to strengthen their common vision of recognizing and supporting young people who will make the world a better place. They continue to grow the run/walk, leading to an even greater ability to protect children and provide scholarships for youth. The movement also brought about Chelsea’s Law, which was put into place to protect children from known violent sexual predators.

Chelsea’s brother Tyler is creating a documentary to promote Chelsea’s Light Foundation. “Today we launched a Kickstarter campaign to finish Tyler King’s groundbreaking documentary – told from his eyes and directed by Emmy award winner Bruce Caulk. Kickstarter is the world’s largest online funding platform for creative projects. The process of grieving, healing, and evolving will be seen from Tyler’s perspective and the eyes of others who share the experience of losing someone to a sexual predator. This film will be a powerful vehicle for giving victims a voice and raising national awareness.” (nk 2014).
